Teaching Old-Fashioned Values in a Modern World

One of the things that I have really enjoyed since I've had a child is a certain reading material called "Parents" magazine. I think there are good articles in this magazine and is a great self help in different stages in your parenting. I just received my magazine this past week and was looking through as my son took a nap. I came up on a article that was so great. I started looking back at how my mother use to parent and teach me all along my childhood. This article was about Old Fashioned Values and it reminded me so much of how I grew up. At the time as a child, I thought it was harsh but now that I am a mother I see that these values are understandable now.
The article writes like this:
There's no doubt that children are becoming more disrespectful at a young age. And the reason is, well duh: With smart mouthed cartoon characters, obnoxious reality shows and constant cell phone interruptions, it's crystal clear that society has become ruder and it's rubbing off on families. Some moms and dads are settling for behavior that's barely acceptable rather than holding their kids to a higher standards they grew up with. For instance, their happy if their kid doesn't roll his eyes when he meets someone new rather than expecting him/her to greet the person nicely.
Given all the outside influences, it may seem practically impossible to instill good, old fashioned values in a young child. While the wagging finger or scare tactics your parents may have used probably won't work, these modern approaches from leading experts will. Try them and your kids will get noticed - for their good manners.

The Old Fashioned Rule:{ 1 } Don't interrupt adults in the middle of a conversation.
You're trying to talk to a friend and your kid screams over and over again: "Mommy Mommy Mommy MOMMY!" is there anything more exasperating? Young kids not only have little impulse control and patience, but they also translate your inattention as "Mommy being taken away from me; I need to get her back"TEACH IT TODAY:
We inadvertently feed the problem by telling our children to say 'excuse me' as if that's the magic word. "They say excuse me and we go ahead and answer them. Well, that's still interruption." A better way: Explain what's expected up front: "I'm talking to Mrs. Jones right now. I'm going to be talking for a few minutes, and I don't want to be interrupted." If your child is waiting quietly, stop to tell him/her how much you appreciate it and that you're almost done. If he/she's not, hold up a finger as a signal to wait. If he/she keeps on, no matter how hard it is to tolerate - don't give in or she'll learn that badgering eventually does work to get your attention. Most importantly, hold up your end of the bargain and in a few minutes tend to her needs: "Now it's your turn, thank you for waiting"{ 2 } Say "Thank you" without being prodded.
Your kids probably get a lot of gifts and treats. Why can't they learn to say thank you automatically? "When parents remind their kids in front of a person who gave the gift, the acknowledgement seems so insincere.TEACH IT TODAY:
Reword your reminders. Instead of asking your kid to say thank you say, "It's the right time to show how much you appreciate your gift." Then kids aren't repeating your words and get used to giving the acknowledgement on their own.
Also get your child in the habit of helping you write thank-you notes. Toddlers can draw a picture; preschoolers may be able to print their name or the first letter of it. How much they can do isn't important, the point is to re-enforce that it's polite to thank someone for a gift.
{ 3 } Greet Adults with "Hello" and a proper name.
When most kids do say something to welcome an adult, they look at the ground and mumble or ignore.TEACH IT TODAY:
Role-play it at home. Pretend you're Aunt Sally or your child's teacher and have him practice saying hello to you. Encourage him to smile or wave and clearly and pleasantly greet the person. If he's reluctant to look up, challenge him to find the color of her eyes. Once he feels comfortable with the process around the house, chances are he'll try it out in public. But it'll work better if you let it be his idea rather than yours.

{ 4 } Hold the door.
Many kids barge through a door, barely noticing the person who opened it or worse still, whether it's going to slam in someones face. They don't automatically think that they should get the door; you have to explain to them that it's the kind thing to do.
TEACH IT TODAY:
Practice at every opportunity. Once introduced to the concept, young kids love to hold doors because they feel like big strong helpers doing a very important job. Start at home: "Mommy's carrying a lot of groceries. Who can hold the door for me?" At the store or at school, where doors may be heavy for a young child to hold on their own, ask them to help you: "Here comes Mrs. Roberts and Brian. Let's hold the door for them because that's the polite thing to do." Begin very low-key and then one day - because you're not requiring it or demanding it - you'll be amazed to hear your child say, "Mommy, I can do it myself."

{ 5 } If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. (My personal favorite!)
Young kids learn from watching TV today that it's okay - even sometimes funny - when people say rude things to each other. Add that to the fact that a young child's sense of empathy isn't fully developed, and it's a recipe for a humiliating situation.TEACH IT TODAY:
First, resist watching inappropriate TV shows - or, at least, discuss the problem behavior with your child. For instance say, "Do you think that was mean of Simon to talk to the singer like that?" Then let your child know what she says has the power to hurt the feelings of another kid or adult. See whether she can recall an example of a time when her feelings were hurt so that you can be sure she grasps the concept. It's also worth making up scenarios and asking her whether the person in the story said a good or bad thing. The more concrete you can make it for her, the better she'd understand it.

{ 6 } Give up your seat.
It usually doesn't cross a young kids mind that giving up a seat to an older person on the train or at a party is the polite thing to do. The chances he'll actually do it are even slimmer.
TEACH IT TODAY:
Lead by example. The next time you're riding a crowded bus or train, ask your child to sit with you. Say: "Would you come sit here on my lap so this nice man can have a seat? I think he would really appreciate it." The more often children see you do it, the more liable they are to come up with the idea themselves.
Interesting Fact:Lose the Excuses!
"He didn't have his nap today"...."She's just hungry"....."He doesn't usually act like this"
It's incredibly tempting to make excuses for your child when he behaves rudely in public. "When you do this, children get the message that they don't have to answer for their behavior because their parents have done it for them. Instead, apologize for the inappropriate behavior. That sends the message "I did something wrong that Mommy and Daddy have to say they're sorry about it to others."

) Metallics – Personally, I think gold and silver are always in style. That being said, metallics were HUGE at the stationery show and how doesn’t like to surround themselves with more silver and gold?! Look for tons of marvelous metallics in paper, especially for the holidays.

2) Ribbon & Glitter – Again, I never get tired of a little satin and sparkle. But it seems no one else will either this year. Lots of invitations and cards had special little unexpected extras on them at the show. It was fun to see a mediocre card come to life with a little dash of glitter and a strip of satin ribbon.

3) Laser Cut Masterpieces – Perhaps, my favorite trend of the WHOLE show! With intricate laser cut detailing and design, wedding invitations and stationery are being beautifully enhanced. Look for gorgeous laser cut wedding invitation bands and for birthdays and bridal showers – gorgeous finely cut cupcake wrappers and place cards.

4) Saracastic Holiday Cards – With messages like “Merry Stressmas and Happy Hollardays,” sarcasm seems to be a trend for this upcoming holiday season. I’m not going to say it’s my favorite trend (I LOVE the holidays and am more of a “Happy Holidays to all!” type), but there are a few new sarcastic greeting cards out there that truly made me giggle at the show.

5) Traditional Invitations - My final trend to share is also a favorite! It seems stationery is going back to more traditional feel. For a little while there in paper, we were dabbling with the 80s-type craziness. 2011-2012 seems to be looking back to a more streamlined traditional beauty in cards and invites that we have seen in the past three years.

Who didn’t love the Royal Wedding! Everything about it was pure perfection and all the details are sure to stand the test of time and naturally have an influence on many a wedding in the near and distant future. Here are the things we think are going to set a trend…

The Getaway Car: My favorite thing of all! The balloons, ribbons, the “Learner” love sign and of course! The JU5T WED” number plate! Going to have try get my hands on all of the above for the shop – what do you think?

The Make Up: We were amazed and impressed that Kate did her own make up! What a brilliant idea for DIY brides. Not only do you learn a new skill but one you will benefit from for a lifetime.

The Hair: Kate wore it down - we like it that she chose her natural style and therefore no sudden surprises. Plus, this is a style that many a bride can also pull off herself.

The Bouquet: Proving that less is sometimes more! We love that it was all white, and more importantly each flower was chosen for it’s Victorian meaning – how appropriate that “Sweet William” was included.

The Other White Dress: Whilst traditionalists would say only the bride should wear white, Pippa Middleton’s white bridesmaid's dress was a stunner! Proving that bridesmaids can wear white AND a dress that they actually like!

The “Little” Bridal Party: The British tradition of having a large but “little” bridal party is too cute. What better way to avoid the “bridesmaids’ dilemmas” and simply opt for a whole bunch of little flower girls and pageboys. Then just have one maid of honor and best man to perform the ceremonial duties.

The Giving Gift Registry: William and Kate opted for charitable donations instead of wedding gifts. What better way to give to others especially for couples who already have all the house goodies they will ever need.

lemon chicken sandwiches

12 slices white bread

butter, for spreading
2 cups (320g) chopped cooked chicken
¾ cup (225g) whole-egg mayonnaise
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons chopped basil leaves
2 tablespoons shredded mint leaves
sea salt and cracked black pepper
whole-egg mayonnaise, extra, for spreading
finely chopped chives

Spread one side of each bread slices with butter. Place the chicken, mayonnaise, lemon juice, basil, mint, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix to combine. Divide chicken mixture between half the bread slices and top with remaining bread. Cut sandwiches into small triangles and brush one side with the extra mayonnaise. Press the mayonnaise into the chives to serve. Makes 24.

What does everyone do for New years now? I used to go out all dressed up and drink champagne,as a mom I am lucky if I make it to midnight in New York! I used to be able to trick my daughter into thinking she had stayed up but know she really wants to stay up till midnight.We stay in and watch movies and eat shrimp, cracked crab and artichokes,weird mix I know but it is delicasy night. Then we wait through tired eyes till the ball drops and go straight to bed covering our ears from the sound of fireworks!
One good thing about it,I don't start the New year off with a hangover any more..totally worth it!

The biggest component of the party were the costumes. I decided to make green and white curtain outfits for each of the children attending. If, for some strange reason, you've never seen the movie, there is a seen where Maria (Julie Andrews) makes play clothes for all the children out of old curtains hanging in her room. I was ecstatic that I actually found green and white toile curtains at the Alameda Antique Fair a few months ago. Even better was that it was enough material for all the little outfits! Because the children attending Pen's party ranged from age seven months to three years old (and because each kid in the movie has a unique outfit), I decided to pick a different pattern for each one of the birthday outfits.

For the backdrop, I stitched various fabrics into this Alps scene. The cupcakes were topped off with images of "Favorite Things."

The party gift bags were also simple references to the brown paper packages tied up with string.

Here's Penelope in her costume. I pieced it together from two patterns. One, a vintage shirt pattern from the 1970s. The other, a modern dress pattern.

The History of Aprons

Remember making an apron in Home Ec? Read below:

I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's
apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few.
It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons
used less material.
But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the
oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used
for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks,
and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood
stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been
shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the
trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much
furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron,
and the men folks knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace
that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's
aprons.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

"They" would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that
apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love ... Amen.

Sleepover party
Invite your favorite wizards over for a night at Hogwarts filled with spells, potions and a game of Quidditch. Theses decorating details, food ideas and games from Celebrations.com’s Yelena Johnson are sure to keep young wizards occupied throughout the night.
Hogwarts Feast:

Create a Hogwarts feast to serve the witches and wizards.
Hogwarts Menu
Turkey leg drumsticks (the big, Renaissance fair style legs)
French fries
Dessert

Charmed Cupcakes from the Honeydukes Sweet Shop (sprinkle pop rocks on top so they pop and crackle when eaten)
Jelly Beans labeled with all of the grossest Bertie Bott’s flavors (earwax, baked bean, spinach). Jelly Belly has a line called Bean Boozled, with weird and wacky flavors that would be perfect for the Hogwarts party.

Hogwarts Party Decorations:
Turn the inside of your home into a Hogwart’s replica with crests, animals and candlestick holders suspended in air.
Create the Hogwart’s Crest
Find a picture of the Hogwart’s crest online and print it out. Find an artistic friend of family member to redraw the crest in Sharpie marker on an old white sheet or large piece of foam core board. Color in the crest after the main images are drawn, and hang it over the dining area or in the sleepover room.
To go all out, also draw the individual crests for each of the houses – Gryffindor (the griffin), Slytherin (a serpent), Ravencrest (an eagle) and Hufflepuff (a badger).
Hogwart’s Dining Hall
Set up your dining room table to look like Hogwart’s dining hall. Here’s how:
Gather four candleabras
Place two on the table and suspend the other two in midair by tying them securely with fishing line and attaching the fishing line to a small hook screwed into the ceiling. Alternately, hang light mason jars from the ceiling or current lighting fixture with lit tealight candles inside so mimic the floating candles in Hogwarts.
Underneath the two candelabras on the table, place two small stacks of Harry Potter books with other items a Hogwart’s student might bring to the table; e.g. glasses, a magnifying glass, a jar with a potion, a jar with a bug or two inside, etc.
Hogwart’s Animals
Each student can bring a cat, rat, owl or a toad. Purchase a few stuffed or plastic versions of these and place them strategically throughout the party area – even on the Hogwart’s dining table.
Hogwarts Party Activities
Potter Potions
Let the witches and wizards create their own potions to drink. Here’s what you’ll need:
Supplies:
- Pop Rocks
- Fizzing Soda like Sprite
- Sparkling lemonade
- Food coloring
- Different colored sherbet (green, pink and blue work well)
Instructions:
1. Ask each house of wizards and witches to work together to create their tastiest concoction and determine a winner after the drinks have been tasted.
Harry Potter Trivia Game
Test the witch and wizards’ knowledge of Harry Potter trivia. Glean questions and answers from the Harry Potter Wikepedia page, which is chock-full of good information.
Quidditch
A Hogwarts party wouldn’t be complete without a rousing game of Quidditch.
Quidditch Supplies & Set Up:
- Two hula hoops hung from high spots at either end of the field
- Soft large Quidditch balls
- One small ball painted gold to serve as the Snitch
- A Set of Quidditch rules explained to the players before-hand

First day of summer....brings back memories of a gentler time?

I was thinking today as my daughter swam 17 laps for summer swim team and I sat diligently near by watching waiting and of course the occasional thumbs up, how different summer holidays are for our kids.Everything is so structured and organized.I actually have not signed my daughter up for much as, at Her delicate age of 10 years I don't think I have too many summers left where she will want to just hang out with mom. Unlike most of my mom friends who don't have a choice or have more than one child , it's not only a necessity but a relief.
Let's go back in time, not that far!!

I think back to my summer days and my mom wasn't looming over me worrying about strangers or my getting hurt(which I did,no helmets) We would ride are bikes for hours,climb trees go for walks ,just be.We were occasionally bored but tough,find something to do.I am very worried about the future of our coddled kids.I have vowed to cut my umbilical chord this summer and let my kid grow up naturally.I may get a few extra gray hairs but hopefully I will send my daughter out filled with confidence and excitement.
I am now off my soap box,carry on with whatever you were doing.

D is for Dinosaur
What kid doesn't love dinosaurs,they could excavate in the sandbox,Fill a small pool with dirt or sand to create the excavation site. Or use construction tape to designate a dig area in your yard. Bury any these items before the party: Real or plastic bones, Popsicle sticks, small dinosaur toys, or old coins. Equip each little paleontologist with a small shovel or soup spoon and a paint brush they can use to clean their finds (optional).
Use dinosaur paint sponges and kid friendly paint to make a dinosaur scene to take home. Don't forget to cover your art area and to provide large shirt smocks. Use dinosaur cookie cutters and play dough.

Cut a paper dinosaur shape for each child. Supply tissue paper and white school glue. Show the children how to tear and crinkle pieces of the tissue paper and then glue it on the dinosaur. Repeat until your dinosaur is filled with color.

CHINESE NEW YEAR OR TEA PARTY

Raise the Red Paper Lantern...it's time to celebrate any joy or good fortune--pronounced Fu (luck) in Chinese--with Chinese-themed merrymaking.
Dim sum, tea, parosoles,and don't forget the fortune cookies....

CANDY THEME:

This theme seems to be all the rage,from weddings to kids to even baby showers?

Candy buffets, giant "wrapped candy" decor, lollipop borders, colorful plush toys, candy pillows, and more...better bring your sweet tooth to this super fun - and sugary sweet - birthday soirée!

Candy land theme is the best,you can even play the game with your guests and the children!

One of the best ways to organize this party is to have the guests visit each area of Candy Land, where they will do a game or activity. As you reach each station, read out the infamous description on the box before you do your activity.

As you start off, place a rainbow of balloons together for the kids to walk underneath as they begin their journey. Given it is the start of the game, have a rainbow taste test. Blindfold the kids and have them taste a variety of things, such as white sugar, lemon juice or lemon drops, orange carrots, etc. The taste test can be anything you want to put out, but make sure it utilizes those bright, primary colors. With the kids blindfolded, it will be a real surprise!

For Gum Drop Pass, have a big jar full of gum drops, and let the kids take turns guessing how many gum drops are inside!

For Mr. Mint, have the kids enjoy a relay race using a spoon and a peppermint. Divide the kids into two teams and have them race back and forth to see which team can finish first without dropping the peppermint!

For the Licorice Castle, have the kids make licorice bracelets. Use thin black and red licorice for the bracelet and let the kids string on colorful Cheerios for edible bracelets. Yum!

For Grandma Nut, make sure the kids have no peanut butter allergies, and if they can, give each a spoonful of peanut butter and see who can finish it first.

For Gloppy, have the kids fingerpaint their own masterpiece with chocolate. They will love this, but be prepared for a mess!

For Queen Frostine, have a crowning ceremony for the birthday girl, if you are celebrating for a little girl, and provide her with a cape and a crown! If the party is for a little boy, crown him King of Candy Land! Give out fun Ring Pops during the crowning event!

Calm after the storm!

I think it's strange how life seems to overwhelm us by so many things on our to do list, all at the same time...rushing around, everyone needing your attention, over scheduled!
Then, just like that you're looking around for something to do!

Take this last month for example!
I had two parties to plan for, a science fair project to help my daughter with.Selling girl scout cookies and collecting money.Trying to place New girl scouts in troops.On top of all the usual mommy list.Now that everything has come to a lull,I am sad! I love to be busy,creative and planning and researching....I never really thought about it before but I do! am I crazy?

I guess that keeps the fires of creativity and passion for life burning.

I will now have to rekindle the embers and get projects going! Let's think?

1. Do every single craft out of Martha Stewart's encyclopedia of crafts, kind of like a Julie &Julia take!

2. Get creative and have a St Paddy's party for the kids

3. Train for a marathon

4.Plant a vegetable garden

We were at our first cookie booth sale last weekend and the weather was great! I was so surprised at the enthusiasm of our customers,they were so happy to see us.Everyone has their
favorite cookies and they stock up.My girls were very happy. People who couldn't eat the cookies donated to our local community table that we serve food at.Sure feels good to make people smile!
I was cruising all the blogs that I check in with everyday and it's so nice to see some other bloggers out selling cookies too!

How it works: 50 families (one from each state) will swap postcards over the next year. Each state will have their own week and will send out 49 postcards, one to each state, during that week. We will go in alphabetical order of the states. At the end of 50 weeks we will all have received a postcard from 49 other states!

The make-up and costumes are fabulous. It looks a bit strange as all Tim Burton movies do. I wonder if its ok for my 11 year old? Anyone know the rating!

I am so glad that 2010 has put me back in the blogging mind frame.I always feel renewed at the start of the new year,full of ideas and a new resurgence in trying new things.

My daughter went back to school today and She was excited. The magic of the holidays forgotten and on to the next big event ......valentines day!!!!!

Being a Mom of a girl scout I am starting the exciting start to cookie selling...like I need another reason to eat!
I found out We have a new cookie and plan on trying it out to see if it honestly can be better than a thin mint?
